Knowing About Hydraulic Cylinder Parts

hydraulic cylinder parts

Hydraulic cylinder parts include cylinder barrel, cylinder base, cylinder head and some other parts. Let's explore together to find out.

Cylinder Barrel

The primary function of the cylinder barrel is to contain the internal pressure within the cylinder. Typically manufactured from honed tubing, the barrel is designed for hydraulic cylinders that do not require additional internal diameter (ID) processing. The surface finish of the cylinder barrel generally ranges from 4 to 16 microinches. The two primary methods for producing cylinder tubes are the honing process and the Skiving & Roller burnishing process. The piston moves back and forth within the cylinder, and the barrel is characterized by a smooth internal surface, high precision tolerances, and durability.

Cylinder Base or Cap

The cylinder cap seals the pressure chamber at one end and is attached to the cylinder body through welding, threading, bolts, or a tie rod.

Cylinder Head

The cylinder head seals the pressure chamber at the opposite end of the cap. It features an integrated rod sealing system or can accommodate a seal gland.

Piston

The piston divides the pressure zones within the barrel. It is precisely machined with grooves to accommodate elastomeric or metal seals and bearing elements.

Piston Rod

The piston rod is typically made of hard chrome-plated cold-rolled steel. It is connected to the piston and extends from the cylinder through the rod-end head, linking the hydraulic actuator to the machine component. This connection may involve a machine thread or a mounting attachment. The piston rod is highly ground and polished to ensure a reliable seal and prevent leakage.

Seal Gland

The seal gland is a section of the cylinder head fitted with seals to prevent pressurized oil from leaking between the rod and the head. A key benefit of the seal gland is its ease of removal and seal replacement. The hydraulic cylinder seal gland typically includes a primary seal, a secondary or buffer seal, bearing elements, a wiper or scraper, and a static seal. In certain cases, particularly with smaller hydraulic cylinders, the rod gland and bearing elements are combined into a single machined part.
